A day in the life of Tash

Big smiles for us as she wanted two bananas and that’s what she got Happy with her care which brings such joy to see relief and happiness.

No two days are the same! Some days are busy longer harder, and others will fly though.

Starting every shift with the task of getting on PPE before every call fighting the aprons and making holes in gloves and steaming up glasses with masks; remember a code for a key safe but gaining access and seeing their smile that you’re there.

Communicating with your client on how they prefer their care; talking about their day; their family, while doing their care. Some do get upset about not being able to clean themselves, but once you have changed their pad and freshened them up there is a smile that beams and lights up their face.

Unfortunately, it’s not all easiness and smiles. Some individuals are unable to control their bladder or their bowels which causes them some embarrassment and sometimes tears, which also brings a
sadness; having them hold your hand; apologising for something they can’t control and then thanking you for being patient with them.

We care for elderly, disabled and palliative as well.

You gain a bond with your clients, and you laugh, and you cry with them.

Sometimes with palliative care you will lose a client or the routines get turned upside down as basic rolling or moving becomes more difficult and more upsetting / confusing where patience and breaks would need to be taken to ease pain, relieve pressure or just to reassure that we are going to ride this
through together. With reassurance, being able to continue with care even though it may add 20 more minutes to your evening, but the bond you have gained you cherish even if it’s hard to imagine not seeing their smile or having their appreciation every day they see you, and although it’s sad and
upsetting when their gone you get to hold the memories you have with them and know that you was part of their smile, you helped.
