A day in the life Jordan
Each day starts with checking the schedule to see which individuals I will get to help. Some days are busier than others.
The morning calls involve all of us trying to wake each other up and gear up for the day ahead.
Throughout the day, when we all start waking up and are feeling a bit more human, when it feels so different from the mornings, some clients may still feel tired and want to nap, and other clients are ready to take on anything that stands in their way. Going into different clients’ homes means adapting to different clients’ needs no two clients are the same.
Throughout the day, there may be some challenges but also some laughs. Some clients may just need a few things done as they still have their independence, then others need a lot more help as some are reaching the end of their lives.
Every day, I look forward to hearing what adventures some of the clients have been on, whether it is a walk in the park or a trip to the moon. It is a joy getting to know the clients, and so many of their stories put a smile on my face.
Being a male carer, I thought it would make some clients feel uncomfortable, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I’ve been welcomed by the clients and my team, and after so many career changes from not knowing what I wanted to do I’m finally feeling like I’m in the industry where I belong.
Being a carer is not just going into people’s homes and cleaning them up. It’s so much more like being a friend or a shoulder to cry on, someone to tell your problems to or just to have a chat.
